On Wednesday Trump gave a bizarre speech on our economy. He started off with a particularly weird lie.

“When I took office, inflation was the worst in 48 years, and some would say in the history of our country.”

Inflation was at 3.0% when Joe Biden turned the White House over. The same as when Trump addressed the nation on Wednesday. And, of course, it had not been the worst inflation in 48 years or in our nation’s history (when inflation hit nearly 20% during WWI.)

More bizarre than the bizarre lie was the bizarre anger, as if Trump was mad at the American people for blaming him for high prices and an uptick in the unemployment rate to 4.6%, the highest since September 2021 when the economy was recovering from COVID.

It’s almost as if he’s falling apart.

And that convinces me that Democrats have a real chance of winning not just the House but the Senate next November.

The president’s party traditionally does badly during midterms. So, there’s very good reason to believe Democrats can flip the House — and by a sizable margin. Especially after the spectacular results in off-year elections in New Jersey, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, and Georgia.

But the Senate map is harder. In no small part because our founders gave two seats to every state so that red states collectively now elect a disproportionate number of senators.

But there are a number of potential pickups — especially if things continue going south for Trump. North Carolina, of course, is extremely winnable with popular former governor, Roy Cooper running for the seat being vacated by Tom Tillis, Susan Collins is considered a toss-up in Maine, which has been trending more and more Democratic. Ohio is in play with former Sen. Sherrod Brown running for JD Vance’s old seat. And Joni Ernst’s retirement in Iowa opens up a possibility there.

That would bring us to 51! Midwest Values PAC will be active in all those states contributing directly to the campaigns and their state parties.

Thanks!

P.S. We need a Congress that will provide a check on this president, and the best way is to elect a Democratic majority in both chambers. That will mean investigations into the massive fraud and self-dealing in the Trump Administration.

Somehow, it’s been 20 years since I started Midwest Values PAC to help Democrats win elections — from progressive organizations to state legislatures to Congress to the White House — who share the values I grew up with in St. Louis Park, Minnesota.

Since 2006, Midwest Values PAC has invested more than $4 million in 341 candidates and organizations — and counting.

Of course, none of this happens without you (or supporters like you) who care enough to pitch in.

As we mark our 20th anniversary, the work is more urgent than ever. This year, we have a big job: flip the House, take the Senate, and win up and down the ballot at the state and local level.

To mark our 20th year, we’ve set an ambitious goal: 26,000 contributions by Election Day 2026.

Thanks for being part of this fight, and for sticking with us for 20 years (or for just joining — welcome!).

P.S. Over the years, okay, decades, we’ve helped Democrats win tough races all across the country by investing early, intelligently, and strategically. That’s how you flip seats. That’s how you protect democracy. And that’s how you stop the worst impulses of a president who never should have been president in the first place.
